Back to school is a family's second New Year: everything starts again at once. New timetables, activities to choose, books to buy, forms to sign, meetings, medical certificates. And it usually all lands in the same two weeks, with parents still in holiday mode.

This checklist splits the work into three phases, so nothing arrives at the last minute.

Before the first day

The year's calendar

As soon as the school publishes them, the dates that shape the whole year go in the family calendar:

  • start and end of term
  • holidays and closures: Christmas, Easter, days off decided by the school
  • parents' evenings and meetings already known

Adding them straight away lets you organise leave, grandparents and holiday clubs before places run out.

Supplies and books

A shared "Back to school" to-do list between parents, with every item assigned:

  • textbooks to order or collect
  • supplies: bag, pencil case, exercise books from the teacher's list
  • clothing: trainers, uniform, PE kit
  • name labels

Whoever takes an item ticks it. No double purchases, no "I thought you were getting it".

The costs

September is one of the most expensive months of the year for a family. Recording books, supplies and sign-up fees in expenses — with who paid and for which child — shows what it really costs, and in separated families helps split extra expenses without reconstructing them from memory.

The first week

The real timetable

Final timetables often arrive after a few days. As soon as you have them, build the typical week: pick-up times, lunches, afternoon activities, who drops off and who collects. We cover it in detail in after school when you both work.

Forms and authorisations

Consent forms, trip permissions, pick-up authorisations, privacy notices, details for the online register. Every signed form gets photographed and saved in the family documents, in a folder per child and per school year. In March, when the school asks for the same authorisation again, it'll be there.

By the third week

Activities

Sport, music, languages: sign-ups close fast. Before enrolling, check on the typical week that the activity really fits both parents' schedules. For every activity in the calendar: days, times, place, and the dates of the first matches or performances.

Medical certificates

Many sports require a medical certificate. Book the check-up straight away, because waiting times grow in September, and put the certificate's expiry date in the calendar with a reminder a month before.

The evening routine

The first weeks are the right time to set up the evening routine — bag packed, clothes chosen, forms signed — before chaos becomes habit. The method is in the family evening routine.

In short

Before the first day: the year's calendar, the supplies list with assigned items, costs recorded. In the first week: the real timetable and forms filed. By the third: activities that fit, certificates booked and the evening routine. Back to school stays intense, but stops being a race.
