A difficult Monday morning is prepared on Sunday evening. Clothes that need washing discovered at the last minute, an empty fridge, a forgotten school trip, the school bag exactly as it was on Friday. None of these is serious. All together, at 7:30 on Monday, they are.
The Sunday reset — a half-hour weekly reset — is the way to reach Monday with the home and the week already in order.
When and how
- Sunday afternoon or before dinner, always at the same time
- 30 minutes, with a timer: when it goes off, you stop
- the whole family, each with their own block
- a playlist helps more than you'd think
Put it in the calendar as a recurring appointment: if it's in the calendar, it happens.
Block 1 — The home (10 minutes)
Not a deep clean: a quick tidy of shared spaces.
- everything goes back where it belongs
- dishwasher emptied, sink clear
- a wash on with what's needed for Monday
- rubbish and recycling out
Everyone takes a room. The children do their bedroom and their corner of the living room.
Block 2 — Fridge and groceries (5 minutes)
Open the fridge, throw out anything expired, see what's missing for the first days of the week. What's missing goes straight onto the shared grocery list, so whoever passes the supermarket on Monday knows what to get.
If you have a weekly menu, this is the moment to confirm it.
Block 3 — The week (10 minutes)
The most important block, done between adults with older children present:
- go through the week's calendar: commitments, appointments, trips, meetings
- decide who drives whom on critical days
- assign the week's to-dos: the call to the paediatrician, the bill, the school form
- flag any scheduling clash
If your family also holds a weekly meeting, the Sunday reset can be its practical part, straight afterwards.
Block 4 — Bags (5 minutes)
- children's school bags emptied of old papers and snacks
- school notices read and signed
- special items for Monday prepared (PE kit, recorder, library book)
- adults' work bags sorted
The Monday that changes
After three or four Sundays the reset becomes a habit, and Monday changes: you leave home knowing what the week holds, with the fridge ready and no surprises. It's the same principle as the morning routine: the morning works if the work was done beforehand.
When there's no Sunday
A weekend away, guests, exhaustion. The reset isn't made up later: do the minimum version — the week's calendar and the grocery list, five minutes — and pick it up again the following Sunday.
In short
Half an hour on Sunday, with a timer and the whole family. Home tidied, fridge checked and grocery list updated, the week reviewed together with tasks assigned, bags ready. Monday won't become anyone's favourite day. But it will stop being an emergency.
